HAProxy vs NGINX vs Traefik: Benchmark Results & Honest Verdict (2025)
We ran each load balancer under 10K, 50K, and 100K requests per second. Latency numbers, SSL overhead, Kubernetes compatibility, config complexity — all measured and compared. Here's the data and our honest recommendation.

HAProxy
Maximum throughput, lowest latency, best health checking. Choose when raw load balancing performance matters.
NGINX
Web server + reverse proxy + load balancer in one. Choose when you need both serving and proxying.
Traefik
Zero-config service discovery, auto Let's Encrypt, native K8s integration. Choose for container-native stacks.
What We Tested
We deployed each load balancer on identical c5.2xlarge EC2 instances (8 vCPU, 16 GB RAM) on AWS, fronting a pool of 3 application servers running a simple Node.js API. All tests used wrk as the load generator from a separate c5.4xlarge instance to avoid bottlenecks.
Test parameters:
- HTTP/1.1 keep-alive connections
- Simple JSON API endpoint (no heavy computation)
- SSL/TLS termination at the load balancer (TLS 1.3)
- 3 backend servers, all healthy
- Versions: HAProxy 2.9, NGINX 1.25, Traefik 3.0

Raw throughput is only half the story. Latency at P95 and P99 is what determines your user experience under load.

The P99 gap at 100K RPS is striking: HAProxy at 24ms vs Traefik at 119ms. For most applications under 20K RPS this difference is imperceptible, but at scale it is significant.

Traefik's Go runtime and service discovery overhead shows in its memory footprint. HAProxy's C implementation is extremely lean.
Configuration Complexity
Performance only matters if you can configure and operate the tool reliably. Here's how each compares on operational experience:
HAProxy Configuration
HAProxy uses a declarative haproxy.cfg file. The syntax is verbose but explicit — you always know exactly what is happening. Changes require a process reload (though HAProxy supports graceful reloads with zero connection drops).
Learning curve: Medium. The frontend/backend model is intuitive, but ACLs and stick tables have a steeper curve.
NGINX Configuration
NGINX uses a block-based config with server, location, and upstream directives. Well-documented, with a huge community. Like HAProxy, requires a reload for config changes.
Learning curve: Medium. Similar to HAProxy but slightly more intuitive for people coming from a web server background.
Traefik Configuration
Traefik is unique: it auto-discovers services from Docker labels, Kubernetes annotations, or Consul. You rarely write routing rules manually — you annotate your services and Traefik configures itself. For Kubernetes, this is transformative.
Learning curve: Low for Kubernetes users, moderate for traditional deployments. The dynamic configuration model is different from HAProxy/NGINX.

If you're on Kubernetes, Traefik's auto-discovery is genuinely game-changing. You deploy a service, annotate it, and it appears in the routing table automatically. No config file updates, no reloads.
For our Kubernetes consulting clients, we typically recommend Traefik as the ingress controller unless there's a specific need for HAProxy-level performance.
SSL/TLS Performance
All three support SSL termination, but their approach and performance differ:
- HAProxy: Uses OpenSSL or AWS-LC. Fastest SSL handshake times. Full control over cipher suites and TLS versions. Requires manual cert management unless using cert-manager.
- NGINX: Also uses OpenSSL. Slightly slower than HAProxy on SSL handshakes but includes built-in OCSP stapling and session caching that is easy to configure.
- Traefik: Slowest SSL handshake in benchmarks but ships with built-in Let's Encrypt ACME client. Zero-config HTTPS is its killer feature — one annotation in Kubernetes and you get free, auto-renewing certificates.
Decision Framework: Which One Should You Use?
If: You are on Kubernetes
Auto service discovery, native ingress, zero-config Let's Encrypt
If: You need maximum throughput (>50K RPS)
Best raw performance, lowest latency at P99, lowest memory usage
If: You need a web server + load balancer in one
Serve static files, handle SSL, proxy to backends — single tool
If: You need advanced DDoS/security features
Stick tables, rate limiting, ACLs, connection limits — most granular control

Our Recommendation for Startups
For most startups in 2025, our recommendation is:
- On Kubernetes (EKS, GKE, AKS): Start with Traefik. The auto-discovery and built-in certificate management saves significant operational overhead.
- On VMs / bare metal: HAProxy if performance is critical, NGINX if you also need static file serving.
- Hybrid: HAProxy at the edge (for DDoS protection and connection management) with Traefik as the internal Kubernetes ingress controller.
